Two weeks after buying my fabulous comfy new settee, I returned to that store to get a bookcase. As I walked through the store, the sofa I had purchased two weeks prior caught my eye: It had been marked down 30%!
I asked customer service for a price adjustment. The rep spoke to the manager, who said that “Unfortunately, you’ve fallen outside the one week price adjustment period.”
I was disappointed, but I told the customer service rep I would just return the following day and ask again. She was rather enthusiastic about my round 2 action plan and said, “You absolutely should!”
I returned to the store the next day with my receipt in hand. Got another customer service rep, another manager and voilá! Just like that, price adjustment honored. No questions asked.
My friend, no doesn’t always mean no. It can mean just ask again. So I ask you, what situations in your life could use a round 2 in the ask department?
When I was 15, my parents enrolled me in an all-girls Catholic high school. I had gotten into a bit of trouble at the public junior high I was in the year prior so my parents reasoned “those nuns will straighten you out.” Oddly enough, I only recalled two nuns at my new school. Anyway, I grew to dislike that private school and desperately wanted to transfer. It didn’t matter to me that a transfer at that point would mean I’d start a new high school as a junior.
Almost every day for many months I told my parents how much I didn’t like that school and I wanted a transfer to another school of my choosing. Almost every day I either heard no or silence. Then one day, my parents replied, “Ok, which school do you want to go?” I had successfully pleaded my case and off to another school I went, where I happily completed my secondary education.
So again, I ask you, where have you received a no and could stand to ask the question again?
Sometimes “no” really means “not yet.”
